Film poster and magazine cover mock ups

Before we are able to create our film poster and magazine front cover we have to create mock ups which allows us to see what our final products will look like and also it gives us the ability to plan ahead and helps us to avoid mistakes.

Instead of using the film magazines 'Total Film' and 'Empire' we decided on making up our own film magazine and decided on the title 'Movie Reel'. The pun in the title reflects on the comedy and wittyness within our film. We decided on a colour scheme of red, white and blue to help symbolise that the American nature of our film. The central image for our film magazine cover is going to be a romantic image of our two main characters, to help to emphasise the genre of our film. We have also included the other groups in our classes films as film magazines usually advertise new releases and because of copy right reasons we cannot use real film images.

Unconventionally we have decided to include a background in our film poster as we did not it to appear too bland, and also because if it has a background you will be more inclined to keep looking back at the image to see if you have missed any detail. We decided to include a parody within our poster to emphasise the humour within our film. Our main characters are mimicking the classic memorial Titanic scene where Jack is drawing Rose naked, but our characters are fully dressed and instead of drawing April Buddy is drawing childing, boyish pictures of a dinasaur. The title of our film is going to be in red as red is usually associated with romance.

Film magazine research

For part of our coursework we have to create a film magazine cover featuring our film 'Wrongcom'. For my research into film magazines i have looked at two popular film magazines which are, Empire film magazine and Total film magazine.

Empire film magazines main focus is the picture of Iron Man, it's main colour focus is red, white and blue. The dark background brings out the focus of the picture and the titles. It has pictures of other films that will be in the magazine down the bottom.

Total Film magazine is a conventional which uses colour schemes on it's magazine covers. The colour scheme used on this particular cover is mainly white and red with a green background. The main focus of this magazine cover is Johnny Depp as his character 'Willy Wonker' in the film 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory'. Our magazine cover is going to have a similar layer to these film covers.

Distributer

After completing the research for our coursework, we were aware that we needed to choose a distributer. As we want our film to be an American production, it would be ideal for our film distributer to be a well known American one. As we have based a lot of our research around similar films to our own such as, 'Juno' and 'Napoleon Dynamite' for both their romantic and humour features so we have decided to use their distributer which is 'Fox Searchlight Pictures' which has also produced other films such as 'Happy Feet'. It is apparant that this will be our distributer as we want our film to be similiar to these and experience the same amount of fame as these other films.

Research on rom com film posters

In this poster for 'Bridget Jones The Edge Of Reason' there are stereotypical female colours used in the titles of the film such as pink and purple, these are used to emphasise the gender that this film is directed at. In the picture at the bottom of the page Bridget Jones is in the middle of two men, this shows that there is going to be conflict between these two men and that the main femaile character is going to be torn between these two men in the film. The tag line uses the rule of three a common feature in film posters, 'Big lawyer Big liar Big problem'. The handwritten effect represents Bridget writing in her diary.

When looking at this film poster you can see that the picture is the main focus of this film poster. You can see that these two characters are going to be the main characters in the film and you can also see that there is a connection between these two characters but because they are standing back to back of each other shows that there is going to be a problem between the pair. The grey background empasises the red bold writing of the title.

'Date Movie' is a spoof rom com and also a parody of other films such as 'Napoleon Dynamite'. The red background and bold, black font used for the title breaks the conventions of most other rom com posters. The symbols such as 'unrated' and the pants on the A in 'Date' are symbols and shows that the film is going to have sexual connections.

Initial coursework ideas

For my A2 media coursework i have decided to stay in the same group as last year with Saffron Keohane, Amy Austin and Chloe Driver. After looking at some examples of teaser trailers we have decided on the genre of our film, we decided on the genre of a romantic comedy (rom com), we want to make it a spoof of a romantic comedy. We've decided to name our film 'Wrongcom', a play on words to empahsise the comedy of our film, and to help give the audience an insight to what our film is going to be like. Aswell as creating a teaser trailer to our film, we will also be creating a film poster and a film magazine cover featuring our film. The general plot line to our film is that rather than using the stereotypically good looking and generally middle class characters seen in films such as 'Failure to launch' and 'Bridget Jones Diary'. We would create characters who aren't good looking and are not expected to be seen in this genre of film.

Film magazine features

There are certain features to a successful film magazine, these are:
  • A masthead
  • A central image
  • Smaller images of other features in the magazine
  • Tagline
  • Coverlines
  • Different font styles appropriate to the advertisements
  • Colour scheme
  • Mode of address

Target audience and age rating

We have chosen an age rating of a 15 for our film. This allows us to appeal to both a teenage and more mature audience and the same time. It also ensures we can use adult humour without offending younger audience members.
Our target audience is going to range between 15 and 35 as we feel these age groups will appreciate the film more than any other. Our film is not aimed at a particular gender as we feel that it is almost a 'spoof' rom com, the humour used will appeal to the men and the romantic parts will appeal to the women, therefore the film will be suitable for both men and women. By making it an American production we are aiming to attract both an American and British audience so there will be features included to appeal to both.

Features of a teaser trailer

Some of the features of a teaser trailer are:

  • To give the audience an insight to the film to make them want to find out more about it

  • To show the release date of the film or seasonal (Summer 2010)

  • Some show the cast or name of institutions e.g Universal

  • To give away the genre, (some indication)

  • Often less than one minute in length

  • To reveal a small glimpse of the film to the audience

  • Released a long time before release date; sometimes before
